How to Choose Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheet

Thickness: Finding the Perfect Balance

The thickness of the polycarbonate sheet is a crucial factor. Thicker sheets offer greater impact resistance and structural integrity, making them suitable for applications requiring high durability, such as roofing, safety barriers, and protective screens. Conversely, thinner sheets are more flexible and lightweight, ideal for projects where weight is a concern or where bending or shaping is required, such as signage and interior partitions.

Transparency: From Clear to Opaque

Polycarbonate sheets come in various levels of transparency, from clear to opaque. The right level of transparency depends on your project’s specific requirements. Clear sheets allow maximum light transmission, making them perfect for skylights, greenhouse panels, and windows. If privacy or light diffusion is needed, consider translucent or opaque sheets, which provide varying levels of opacity while still allowing some light to pass through.

UV Protection: Ensuring Longevity

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause polycarbonate sheets to yellow or degrade over time, reducing their clarity and lifespan. To combat this, look for sheets treated with UV inhibitors or a UV-resistant coating. These additives protect the sheets from UV damage, ensuring long-term clarity and performance, especially in outdoor applications exposed to sunlight.

Special Features: Tailoring to Your Needs

Depending on your project requirements, you may need polycarbonate sheets with special features:For applications where fire safety is crucial, such as building interiors or transportation infrastructure, consider sheets with fire-resistant properties that comply with relevant building codes and regulations. Some sheets are designed with thermal insulation properties, helping regulate temperature and reduce energy consumption. These are ideal for applications where climate control is important, such as roofing and façades. For applications prone to scratching or abrasion, such as protective screens or glazing, consider sheets with an anti-scratch coating. This enhances durability and maintains optical clarity, extending the lifespan of the sheets.

Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheet Fitting Instructions

Storage & Sheet Preparation
Store sheets on a flat surface. Use an opaque cover, tightly secured, to protect from wind, rain and sun.Storage is always preferable indoorsEnsure that the clearly marked UV protected surface of the Marlon ST sheet is to the outside.Marlon ST sheets must always be installed with the ribs running vertically, or up-slope.Roofs should always be designed with a minimum slope of 5° to allow adequate rainwater run-off.Marlon ST sheet can be cut with a fine tooth circular saw or hand saw at a shallow angle.Use aluminium sealing tape at the top of the sheet to prevent ingress of moisture, dust and insects.

Accessories
It is recommended that the ends of the multiwall polycarbonate sheets are sealed to minimise the build-up of moisture or dust contamination within the channels. A sealing tape, preferably aluminium, is applied at the top of the sheet to prevent ingress of moisture, dust and insects. A breather tape applied to the bottom end of the sheet permits air to move freely in and out of the sheet, helping minimise condensation.

Drilling & Fixing
When drilling fixing holes they must be oversized (18mm) to allow the sheet to move.Drill between ribs and at least 40mm from the edge of the sheet.Fixings must not be overtightened, again this allows the natural movement of the sheet and will avoid unnecessary damage to the sheet.

Finishing
Cover breather tape with a ‘U’ profile sealed to the top face of the sheet with a small silicone bead.Use a low-modulus neutral silicone as an all-purpose silicone will cause polycarbonates to crack and disintegrate.Ensure all film is completely removed immediately after installation.

Film Removal
The UV protected surface of the multiwall sheet is covered at manufacture with a branded film. A further plain film is applied to the inner surface. To install, the films should be peeled back about 50mm to allow clean sheet insertion into the glazing system and application of end tapes and closure. Ensure all film is completely removed after installation is complete.

How to Maintain Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheet

Checking for Damages and Cracks
Examine the whole surface of the clear roofing sheets for any obvious cracks, holes, or damage. Bad weather, fallen objects, or faulty installation may bring these on. If ignored, cracks or other damage can weaken the roof’s structure and cause leaks or other harm.

Assessing the Condition of Seals and Fasteners
Examine the seals and fasteners holding the multiwall polycarbonate sheet in place. Verify that the seals are not degrading and are intact. The structural integrity of the roof should be preserved by replacing or tightening any loose or broken fasteners.

Recommended Cleaning Agents
Apply gentle, non-abrasive cleaning solutions made especially for surfaces made of plastic roof sheets. The surface of the sheets may get damaged if strong chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleansers are used.

Proper Tools and Equipment

A soft-bristle brush, a pail of warm water, a non-abrasive sponge or cloth, and a squeegee or soft towel for drying are among the cleaning supplies that you’ll need.

Protect against Chemicals

To prevent damage or discoloration, do not use strong chemicals or solvents in close proximity to polycarbonate roofing sheets. Rinse the area well with water if any chemicals come into touch with the roof.

Remove Snow and Ice

Use a roof rake or a soft-bristle broom to clear the snow off the roof in locations that have received a lot of snowfall. This lessens the possibility of structural damage and helps avoid placing too much weight on the roof.

Seek Professional Assistance

It is advised to seek professional assistance if you observe major damage or have questions about any maintenance practices. Experts in polycarbonate roofing sheets can give advice, carry out repairs, or make recommendations for particular upkeep needs.

FAQ

Q: What is a multiwall polycarbonate sheet used for?

A: Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheets. Unlike other glazing materials, multi-wall polycarbonate sheet is virtually unbreakable and provides as much as 60% more thermal insulation than glass. Its light weight, durability, strength and ease of installation make it the ideal glazing material, especially for outdoor applications.

Q: What is the difference between polycarbonate solid and multiwall?

A: Solid polycarbonate sheet is single solid layer, while hollow sheet has at least two walls. Hollow polycarbonate or multiwall sheet is superior to solid sheet in thermal insulation for it traps air in its hollow structure as an excellent thermal barrier. Multiwall polycarbonate sheet is not as good as solid sheet.

Q: What is the difference between twin wall and multiwall polycarbonate?

A: What's the difference between twinwall and multiwall polycarbonate sheet? Generally speaking twinwall refers to a product that has just two walls, whereas multiwall refers to any polycarbonate sheeting that has more than two walls.

Q: Can you walk on multiwall polycarbonate sheets?

A: Do not walk on the sheet or store anything on top of the sheet. Each sheet is protected on both sides with a masking film. This film should remain on the sheet until installation. Pull it away from the edges before fitting it into the glazing bars/accessories.

Q: What should you not use on polycarbonate?

A: DO NOT use abrasive or highly alkaline cleaners on polycarbonate sheet products. Never scrape polycarbonate sheet products with squeegees, razor blades or other sharp instruments. Benzene, gasoline, acetone, or carbon tetrachloride should never be used on polycarbonate sheet products.

Q: What is a cheaper alternative to polycarbonate sheets?

A: Acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA) is cheaper than polycarbonate. It is more transparent and has a high-gloss finish. Acrylic can be used as a safe, lightweight alternative to glass in applications where better optical properties are the most important consideration.

Q: What is multiwall polycarbonate sheeting used for?

A: Polycarbonate multiwall sheets have excellent light transmission of about 85%. Plus, they distribute light more evenly and filter out harmful UV rays, which make them the perfect material for greenhouses and bedrooms or living rooms that require natural lighting. Structural aesthetic appeal.

Q: Is twin-wall polycarbonate easy to cut?

A: The good news is that our Solid, multiwall and Twinwall Sheets are manufactured from polycarbonate which is higher quality and a lot easier to cut! Polycarbonate Sheets are one of the easiest sheets to cut making them popular for a wide range of applications on both DIY and Trade roofing projects.

Q: Is half inch polycarbonate bulletproof?

A: How Much Polycarbonate Does It Require To Stop A Bullet? The required thickness of the polycarbonate depends on the level of protection. For level 1 protection, 0.75 inches of thickness will work just fine.

Q: Can you bend polycarbonate panels?

A: Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic, which means that the material becomes soft when heated. Hot bending of Lexan polycarbonate can be done in several ways: with a professional bending device, a filament or heating element, a hairdryer, an adjustable paint burner, or a convection oven.

Q: Does polycarbonate warp in the sun?

A: Because of acrylic's chemical composition, it's resistant to UV rays and doesn't warp or discolor as easily. Polycarbonate sheets, however, need additional protection from the sun's rays -- usually a thin layer of a UV ray-resistant coating is applied to both sides of the material.

Q: Does polycarbonate crack when cut?

A: Polycarbonate sheets can be cut with either a circular saw or a jigsaw. A circular saw is the best tool for cutting larger polycarbonate lengths. Thanks to the properties of this material, polycarbonate won't crack or splinter around the cut.

Q: What destroys polycarbonate?

A: Popular household cleaners such as Windex or 409 will cause damage to polycarbonate sheets and should never be used as a substitute for a proper cleaner. It is also imperative that you never use a dry cloth, or your hand, to wipe clean a piece of polycarbonate.

Q: Which is stronger, plexiglass or polycarbonate?

A: Acrylic has roughly 17 times the impact resistance. Polycarbonate is the stronger material at 250 times the impact resistance of standard glass. Polycarbonate offers much more resilience than acrylic, making it ideal for highly demanding applications like bullet-resistant windows.Compared to polycarbonate, acrylic has a higher tensile strength and UV resistance. Acrylic is less expensive than polycarbonate and is commonly used as a suitable alternative when impact resistance is not a key factor.

Q: How long will polycarbonate panels last in the sun?

A: 10-20 years
The lifespan of a polycarbonate roof panel depends on the amount of sunlight it receives. Most clear roofing sheets are rated for 10-20 years and can last up to 30 years if installed in a shaded area. The installation and maintenance of polycarbonate roof panels determine how long they will last.

Q: What is the difference between twinwall and multiwall polycarbonate?

A: Polycarbonate twinwall is made up of two layers of plastic (polycarbonate) sheets which are attached together with a support layer which is made of plastic too. This adds strength which means the sheet can support weight easily. In comparison, multiwall provides greater heat and sound insulation.

Q: What are the benefits of multiwall polycarbonate?

A: The unique structure of Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheets provides superior thermal insulation, minimizing heat loss during winters and heat gain during summers. This feature helps in maintaining a comfortable indoor environment and reduces energy consumption. In fact, it is completely recyclable at the end of its use like many other recyclable plastics. It can be recycled through two major methods: melting and shredding for it to keep its initial integrity and be reused effectively and efficiently.

Q: Which color polycarbonate is best?

A: Clear Polycarbonate.Simply put, you won't find a better material out there for consistent clarity and durability in even the harshest of environments. The choice, then, comes down to which sort of clear polycarbonate sheet best suits your needs. Its thickness ranges from 1” to 2 ½” depending on the UL level of protection, stopping shots from handguns to AK-10s, as well as offering blast protection. Glass-clad polycarbonate can be used in interior and exterior applications.

Q: Are there different grades of polycarbonate?

A: The polycarbonates for sale are available in quite a number of grades for different applications. Normally, these materials can be classified as standard, flame retardant, hard coated or anti-static grades. The choice will solely depend on the ultimate application of the polycarbonate (PC) material. One downside to polycarbonate sheets is that they are not scratch resistant and denting or scratching on the surface is possible if extra caution and care are not taken.

Q: How do you cut clear multiwall polycarbonate?

A: Table Saw: Push polycarbonate sheets through the saw as you would a piece of plywood paneling. Box Knife: Not recommended, but can be used for small, short cuts. Always draw the knife away from the hand holding the polycarbonate sheet. A box knife tends to drag and skip, making it dangerous to use.Give the polycarbonate pergola roof a quick rinse to get as much dirt off before you start cleaning. TIP: Don't use a pressure washer on your polycarbonate pergola roof as it can damage the surface. Instead, use your garden hose to rinse off the area.
